Use and maintenance skills of battery connection cables:
1. How to reduce the corrosion of the battery connecting wire connector
There is often white, yellow or green corrosion on the connector of
the battery connection wire (especially at the end close to the
battery). Among them, the white corrosion substance is lead
sulfate, the yellow corrosion substance is iron sulfate, and the
green corrosion substance is copper sulfate. Corrosion at the end
of the battery connection line comes from three aspects: one is
acid corrosion caused by spilled electrolyte, the other is
electrical corrosion caused by high current and contact resistance,
and the third is air oxidation.
The resistance of these corrosive substances is very large, which will hinder the passage of current. At the same time, after the wire ends are corroded, the cross-sectional area will decrease and the voltage drop will increase, so they should be coated with Vaseline oil for protection. Industrial vaseline is a hydrocarbon-based grease with a fine and uniform structure, which is more suitable for corrosion protection of metal parts stored for a long time. The purpose of applying vaseline oil is to separate the contact between the electrolyte, the air and the battery terminal, but not to hinder the passage of the current. Therefore, you should first polish the surface of the terminal and the terminal with an emery cloth, then remove impurities, and then apply oil, that is, apply Vaseline to the outside of the joint.
2. Power-saving use of batteries on locomotives
1). Good installation and good maintenance are important measures
to prevent battery self-discharge and scientifically save
electricity. Since the battery equipped with the locomotive is
often subjected to strong vibration shocks or falling soil and
dust, as well as being affected by humidity, rain and snow, it
brings opportunities for self-discharge. Timely removal of
contamination on connecting pieces, terminals, and wires, and
regular inspection of rust, looseness and breakage are the keys to
ensuring the normal use of batteries.
2). To increase the cross section of the wire, it is best to use a
wire with a cutoff of 1 to 2 amperes per square millimeter, and
shorten the length of the wire, which is one of the most effective
measures to reduce line loss and reduce invisible power
consumption.
3). For the load line that often has a large amount of current
passing through, the contact resistance must be reduced or even
eliminated. Applying conductive paste on the clean and dry contact
surface of the battery terminal can reduce the contact resistance
by more than 40%, so as to reduce energy consumption and save a lot
of electricity. If it is difficult to purchase the conductive
paste, you can prepare it by yourself. Take 3 parts of electric
powder (copper powder or graphite powder, particle size below 200
mesh) and 1 part of medical vaseline, mix well, add several times
of transformer oil and stir into a thin paste. Generally, it is
formulated into a 100-gram bottle at a time, and can be taken as
needed.
3. Be sure to prevent poor grounding of the grounding wire
In order to save metal wires and reduce failure points, the
electrical system of the motor vehicle adopts a single-wire system,
and the negative ground is used. Only when the negative electrode
of the battery is reliably connected to the frame, body, engine
casing or transmission casing through the ground wire can a circuit
be formed, and various electrical equipment can work normally.
Since the anti-vibration rubber pad is set between the engine,
transmission and other assemblies and the frame, the battery and
the frame must be connected by a cable, which is called the main
ground wire.
The current of any branch circuit of the vehicle starts from the positive pole of the battery, flows into the electrical equipment through the connecting wire, and then flows back to the negative pole of the battery through the metal part of the frame through the ground wire. If there is no ground wire, or the ground wire is poorly grounded (that is, the resistance is too large), a loop will not be formed, the circuit will be disconnected, and the electrical equipment will not work.
Therefore, a good grounding is one of the prerequisites for the normal operation of the locomotive electrical system. When the locomotive fails to start, the electric starter fails to run, and the charging current is too small, the grounding condition of the battery should be checked. Maintenance practice has proved that many faults are caused by dummy grounding. False grounding has the following situations: one is that the fastening bolts at the joint of the connecting wire are loose, the other is that the core of the grounding wire and the joint are soldered, and the third is that there is paint or oxide on the grounding surface. No matter what kind of situation occurs, it will cause the contact resistance to be too large, or even cause an open circuit.
